Cunard
The British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company was founded
in 1839 by Samuel Cunard principally to carry the Royal Mail between Britain
and North America, and in doing so inaugurated in 1840 the first timetabled
steamship service across the Atlantic Ocean.
The company,
which became known as Cunard Line, acquired White Star Line in 1935. Among
the best known Cunard liners are Carpathia, famous for rescuing survivors
of the ill-fated Titanic; Mauretania, which for 22 years held the "Blue
Riband" for the fastest Atlantic crossing; and Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth,
which carried between them over 1.5 million troops during World War II.
Widely
recognized as the most famous ship in the world today, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth
2 maintains the legacy of her Cunard and White Star forbearers in providing
the only scheduled transatlantic liner service. QE2 is joined by the intimate
Caronia, which caters primarily to a British clientele. Whether on liner voyages,
transatlantic crossings or epic World Cruises, these two grand Cunarders cater
to sophisticated, well-seasoned travellers who enjoy the cultured atmosphere
of classic luxury liners along with every modern amenity.
In May
1998, a consortium led by Carnival Corporation acquired Cunard. In October
1999, Carnival announced their acquisition of the remainder of Cunard, thereby
owning 100 percent of Cunard Line. Cunard currently has two new ships on order:
the much-anticipated Queen Mary 2, the world's grandest and largest passenger
vessel ever constructed (150,000 tons) - which is scheduled for delivery in
late 2003 - and an as yet-unnamed liner to serve the British market (85,000
tons) that will be delivered in January 2005.

DESTINATIONS:
Queen
Elizabeth 2 - This legendary liner is presently the world's only ship offering
regularly scheduled transatlantic crossings. Her popular New York to Southampton
voyages operate from April through December. Select cruises to New England
& Canada, the Norwegian fjords and the Mediterranean are interspersed
during summer months. At Christmastime, QE2 cruises the warm Caribbean before
departing on her annual World Cruise from January through April.
Caronia
- This elegant vessel is frequently based in Southampton offering five- to
21-day cruises to a variety of worldwide destinations, including the Western
Europe, Norwegian fjords, North Cape, Mediterranean and Black Sea and Christmas
and New Year's cruises to the Canary Islands. Come winter she follows the
sun to the Caribbean and sails to South America.
Queen
Mary 2 - When this highly anticipated ship makes her debut in January 2004
she will begin sailing the transatlantic service she was specifically designed
for as well as trips to exotic ports such as Rio de Janeiro at Carnival time.
With her exceptional speed, the vessel will also offer a series of Caribbean
cruises from New York and liner voyages to exciting worldwide destinations.
Unnamed
Newbuild - While itineraries for Cunard's newbuild have not been finalized,
it is known that she will be deployed out of Southampton for the UK market.
The ship will be built to Panamax standards so it also can be deployed on
a variety of worldwide itineraries
