John
L. Jacobs
CEO, Nasdaq Global Funds, Inc. and Executive Vice President, Worldwide
Marketing
The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc.
As
head of the Nasdaq Global Funds Division, Jacobs is responsible for
all aspects of the financial products business strategy, including the
development of new products and product licensing, both in the U.S.
and abroad. Under his direction, NASDAQ launched one of the most successful
financial products in stock market history: The NASDAQ-100 Index Tracking
StockSM (QQQ).
Nearly four years after its first day of trading on March 10, 1999,
"the fund that trades like a stock" averages more than 90
million shares a day and is worth approximately $15 billion*, making
QQQ one the most successful exchange-traded funds to date. As the lead
on the QQQ project from its inception, Jacobs has overseen all aspects
of the fund's development, including the necessary Board approval, contracts
and agreements with The American Stock Exchange (which lists QQQ), SEC
filings, launch agreements, web site development, marketing strategy,
and continued day-to-day management of the product.
As Executive Vice President of NASDAQ Worldwide Marketing, Jacobs plays
a key role in the strategic development and implementation of the company's
branding and messaging. His group is responsible for marketing programs,
advertising and marketing communications-through a full scope of media-to
all Nasdaq® customer groups, both domestic and international.
Among his former responsibilities at NASDAQ, Jacobs launched and led
NASDAQ's first listed-company sales force, then went on to lead the
company's customer service teams. Charged with delivering value-added
products, programs and services to NASDAQ companies, each team was responsible
for all marketing and communication efforts to its own customer base.
Under Jacobs, both teams were highly successful when measured in terms
of market share, customer service quality, service ratings and penetration
levels.
Also included in his broad range of experience is management of NASDAQ's
listings and compliance group, which reviews and processes all SEC documents
and financial filings for both public companies and those companies
applying to become public on The Nasdaq Stock Market®.
Additionally, Jacobs was part of the team that garnered a "yes"
vote from more than 5,000 NASD member firms to spin off NASDAQ. Since
then, he has been part of the core group that successfully orchestrated
the first two rounds of NASDAQ's private placements, paving the way
for NASDAQ to become a publicly traded company.
Jacobs earned his BS in accounting from the University of Maryland,
is a certified public accountant (CPA), and holds an MBA in Finance
and Economics from Loyola University. In addition to working at NASDAQ,
he has taught Investment Banking in the MBA programs at both Johns Hopkins
University and Georgetown University. Each year, he also serves as a
judge in the Washington, DC-based Entrepreneur of The Year Program sponsored
by Ernst and Young. Jacobs has been asked to judge similar programs
in New York City and has presided over the MBA competition at the University
of Maryland. In addition to serving on the Board of Nasdaq Financial
Products, Inc., he serves on the boards of CourtExpress; the NASD Insurance
Agency, LLC; and the Nasdaq BIOS Joint Venture, LLC. Jacobs was recently
named to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Indexes.
