Tom Jardine has been instrumental in the growth of the primary and secondary trading market for Exchange Traded Funds over the past few years. He started the ETF trading desk at Merrill Lynch with the launch of the Select Sector Spiders in December 1998. Under Tom's direction, the desk experienced significant growth during 1999 trading the Select Spiders, becoming very active in the newly launched QQQ product, and launching and actively trading the HOLDR products. Merrill Lynch quickly became the number 1 ETF broker-dealer in both the primary and secondary marketplace.
Tom then took his ETF trading expertise to Lehman Brothers to set up a formidable trading operation where they had previously little exposure to the marketplace. In addition to setting up a trading desk, Tom helped introduce an ETF research product at LEH including trade ideas and general trends in the ETF market. After just 6 months, the combination of a strong trading presence and a research product brought Lehman into the top tier of ETF brokers.
Tom continued the ETF crusade, taking his desk building skills to midtown at Deutsche Bank. There Tom joined the top ranked portfolio desk to add the ETF product to DB's menu of market leading derivative offerings. After just a few months, DB scaled it's way to the top of the ETF trading league tables. Tom continues to work with the domestic derivatives group and is busy building DB's global ETF product coverage.
Tom has spoke at several ETF conferences, discussing different aspects of trading and liquidity for ETF's. In addition, Tom has been quoted in various publications commenting on the growth of and the applications of the ETF product.
After receiving a BA in Applied Mathematics at Brown University, Tom started his career at Merrill Lynch in the Money Markets Origination group. After spending 5 years pitching Medium-Term Notes, Tom returned to academia receiving an MBA from the University of Chicago concentrating in Finance and Statistics. He then returned to Merrill but with a Far Eastern assignment trading index arbitrage on the Equity Portfolio trading desk in Tokyo.
On the personal side, Tom's wife and four children keep him busy during off market hours. Tom has coached his sons' lacrosse teams for the past five years, he started and remains president of the Fathers Club at his children's school. Tom also attempts to relive his athletic glory days playing tennis, hockey, paddle, lacrosse and multi-sport on occasion.
