Lilia Clemente ranks as one of the most successful and visible global investment strategists in the world today. Over a span of more than 20 years, she has excelled at interpreting global economies of the world. Today, she leads the Clemente Capital organization headquartered in New York City, offering investment research and management expertise covering six continents.
Ms. Clemente was born in the Philippines, where her father was a lawyer and her mother was the first woman to own a seat on the Manila Stock Exchange. After earning a BA in Business Administration from the University of the Philippines, she studied economics and international trade at the University of Chicago, earning a Master of Arts in Economics and an A.B.D.
After three years as an Investment Analyst and Portfolio Manager responsible for the coverage of metals, steel, retailing and consumer industries at CNA Financial Corporation, she was appointed Director of Investment Research and Assistant Treasurer for the Ford Foundation in New York in 1969. She was the first woman and youngest officer in the Foundation's history. From 1969?1976, she served as Director of the Foundation's research staff and spurred the globalization of its $3 billion portfolio.
In 1976, Ms. Clemente left the Ford Foundation and founded Clemente Capital, which focused initially on economic and business consulting with emphasis on the Pacific Basin. In 1983, Clemente contracted to provide global investment management services to Mitchell Hutchins, the wholly?owned asset management subsidiary of PaineWebber, Inc. Until 1986, she spearheaded this firm's successful launch into global investing; PaineWebber Atlas, a global mutual fund, ranked #1 among all global funds in 1985.
In 1986 Clemente Capital, Inc. was reorganized and broke new ground listing two closed?end mutual funds on the New York Stock Exchange; Clemente Global Growth in 1987 and The First Philippine Fund in 1989.
Today, as global strategist, Ms. Clemente continues to lead Clemente Capital, providing an active voice on the firm's Investment Committee, where investment decisions are made for the firm's public and private pension fund clients, private individual accounts, and other commingled accounts. She is also active in many civic groups and foundations, particularly those with an interest in Asian?American affairs. Ms. Clemente is the Chairman of the Manila based Asian Securities Industry Institute (ASII) and Washington?based Philippine American Foundation. She has been member of The New York Society of Security Analysts since 1966, a Fellow of Financial Analysts Federation and a member of The Board of Directors of The United States Securities Industry Association.
